Vijfhuizen is a village on the north-west side of the Haarlemmermeer, located on the ring canal between Hoofddorp and Haarlem. The village has a population of 4,400. It is only village that existed before the Haarlemmermeer was reclaimed. The characteristic Nieuwebrug bridge connects Vijfhuizen with the bustling city of Haarlem.
The village is very centrally located and has fine travel options to the surrounding cities of Haarlem, Amsterdam and Hoofddorp. Along Vijfhuizen runs the N205, also called the Drie Merenweg. In addition, the village is connected to the Randstadnet (R-net). The village has several neighbourhoods: Nes, Baarsjes, Mient, and Stellinghof. Stellinghof is a Vinex neighbourhood and stands out because of its unusual architecture. There are two schools, a public school and an inter-confessional school. There is also an active village association and the village offers various sports facilities. The largest sports club in Vijfhuizen is DSOV. This includes a football and handball club. Finally, an annual festival week is organised in September.

Vijfhuizen is surrounded by recreational areas suitable for young and old. Park Vijfhuizen is one of the newest recreational areas in the area. The area offers a nice playground for children and the various walking and cycling paths connect directly to nature reserves the Groene Weelde, the Plesmanhoek and the Haarlemmermeer forest. A beautiful memorial in memory of the victims of flight MH17 has been built in the park. In addition, the park has a direct view of Big Spotters Hill on the former Floriade site.
