Schalkwijk neighbourhood information
Schalkwijk is the youngest district of Haarlem and is located on the southeast side. The district takes up about 25% of Haarlem's total area, and thus has a population of about 33,000. Schalkwijk was built in the 1960s, but has been considerably expanded and renewed in recent years. A neighbourhood on the rise! Schalkwijk can be subdivided into Boerhaavewijk, Molenwijk, Meerwijk and Europawijk. Schalkwijk is characterised by wide streets and lots of greenery. For instance, the Engelandpark and the park around the Molenplas recreation area. Schalkwijk has a large indoor shopping centre, recently extended with a cinema. Thanks to the Zuidtangent express bus, the area is well connected to Haarlem city centre, Hoofddorp and Schiphol Airport. Haarlem-Spaarnwoude train station is at cycling distance.

Want to shop comfortably and dry? Then visit Schalkwijk's indoor shopping centre: Centrum Schalkwijk. You can go here for your daily shopping, but also for department stores and specialist shops. The shopping centre is easily accessible by public transport and offers ample parking at low rates (the first 3 hours you pay only 50 cents per hour). On shopping Sundays, parking is free. If you haven't shopped enough, the cosy shopping streets of Haarlem city centre are also within easy reach. Finally, the Europa neighbourhood borders an extensive park: the Engelandpark. The beautifully landscaped park borders the Spaarne river. Finally, children can have hours of fun in Speeltuin de Eenhoorn. Besides climbing equipment, a cableway and Haarlem's highest slide, the playground also has a petting zoo.
